On December 5, Deshawn Pressley was shopping at a Kroger grocery store in Lemon Township, OH, with his one-year-old daughter when he struck up a conversation with an elderly lady, Pat Goins, 87. After they chatted for a bit, they went to separate checkout lines.

Moments after that, Deshawn heard the woman scream and yell. A man had snatched her purse. He chased the suspect and subdued him in the parking lot until the police arrived.

“I did what I needed to do as a citizen,” Deshawn explained later, adding his grandma raised him that way.

For his heroism and invaluable help to stop the thief, the Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones presented the young father with the Citizen’s Award during a ceremony.

“I’m glad that he received this honor because he’s my hero,” Pat Goins commented. “And we’ve got a dinner date!”
