It was supposed to be a simple weekend visit — one dinner, some laughter, maybe a few photos for Mom’s Facebook.
But the moment we walked in, the silence hit me like a slap.

My daughter clung to my hand, smiling at her grandparents.

“She can’t sleep here. We have no space for her.”

The table went quiet.
My little girl’s smile faded. She didn’t understand — not fully — but she knew it was about her.

That’s when I stood up. Slowly. Calmly.
I packed my daughter’s bag, walked to the door — and before I left, I placed a small velvet box on the table.

As I drove away, my daughter asked why Grandma didn’t like her.
